The minor pentatonic scale is the fifth mode of the major pentatonic scale. It contains a minor seventh chord built on its root, and therefore tends to be used over minor seventh chords: [EXAMPLE] During the mid-1960's, the John Coltrane wrote many modal compositions that essentially consisted of a single minor seventh chord. Often, he and pianist McCoy Tyner used the minor pentatonic scale in these compositions. Here is an example: [EXAMPLE]
