A Jazz Improvisation Almanac Unit: Music Theory Chapter: Jazz Scales |
|
This is a preview of the educational program A Jazz Improvisation Almanac which is under development for the Outside Shore Music Online School. Feel free to browse this preview and learn what you can from it. For a more completed product, though, check out the original freely browsable jazz textbook, A Jazz Improvisation Primer. The modes of the melodic minor scale are some of the richest sounds in jazz harmony. It is in fact quite remarkable how radically these colors differ from those of the scales discussed thus far, which, except for the blues scale, are largely based on the major scale. Learning these scales, particular the lydian dominant, altered, and locrian #2 scales, can add a great deal of harmonic variety to your playing.
