The styles of music described in this chapter include elements of jazz, but they are also belong to other traditions. There is considerable debate regarding the extent to which these styles should be considered jazz, but I do not intend to try to resolve that issue. It may appear that I have taken a stand by isolating these styles into their own chapter, but I did only this to emphasize the fact that these styles have roots that come from outside the world of jazz, not to claim that they have no place within that world.
