The Outside Shore
Online Art School

Drawing (no pun intended) from my experience teaching music, I am developing a set of teaching materials for art as well. My special talent in education has always been my ability to get right to the heart of the matter at hand, identifying the most important concepts and explaining them clearly. The following essays represent my attempt to summarize what I think the beginning artist needs to know. Check back here often, as I plan to add new essays periodically:.

  • Introduction to painting
In this chapter I describe the process of learning to paint - a brief overview of the things you will need to know. The individual skills will be explored in more detail in future essays, but this chapter establishes the groundwork, and I recommend all aspiring artists read it first.
  • Materials and techniques
If you are feeling overwhelmed and are unsure where to begin in actually trying to paint, this is the chapter for you. This chapter is divided into three main sections - discussion of the various painting media themselves, the equipment used, and the techniques of painting, . The equipment techniques described are largely independent of the actual medium you choose - oil, watercolor, pastel, etc. Since my experience is in pastel and oil, those are the media I discuss in most detail.
  • Demonstrations
If you cannot come along with me as I paint en plein air, the next best thing is to check out my demos. For each of these, I brought my camera with me as I painted and took pictures to show you the progress of my painting. Then I went home and wrote up a detailed description of what I did and why I did it.
