The Block-In

If you are wondering why the scene behind the easel does not look like the picture of the scene or my sketch, it is because I set it up facing away from the scene. I did this so the sun would not be shining directly on my canvas board. My board is 16x20", which is about as big as I can comfortably work outdoors in oil.

Here is a closer look at my palette. The colors I have laid out, clockwise starting from the lower left, are white, azo yellow, naphthol red, quinacridone rose, ultramarine blue, phthalo green, and burnt sienna.

The first thing I did was transfer my sketch to my canvas. I put a very small amount of burnt sienna paint on my dry brush and drew the same shapes in. I first drew outlines, but I also very roughly colored in the shapes to show their relative values. This whole process took less than ten minutes.
