Vijay Iyer Trio with special guest Steve Coleman

Off the Top (Vijay Iyer, Multiplicity Music (SESAC), 1995). This track appears on the trio's current release, Memorophilia, on Asian Improv Records (AIR 0023), featuring Steve Coleman, George Lewis and Francis Wong. Based in the SF Bay Area, Vijay currently leads three groups - the trio heard here, Spirit Complex, and Poisonous Prophets. He has worked extensively with Coleman (appearing on his upcoming Myths, Modes, and Means), as well as having performed with John Tchicai, Cecil Taylor, Peter Apfelbaum, the ROVA Saxophone Quartet, and many others. What's New

Seagull (Shimon Benshitrit). What's New is a Boston-area septet, emphasizing original compositions and unique arrangements of standards. The band has been together for two years and this track comes from their recently recorded demo tape. Gordon Brisker Quartet

Lush Life (Billy Strayhorn). Currently in a teaching position in Australia, Gordon Brisker has spent many years in the LA area, performing in a wide variety of settings including backing singers such as Anita O'Day, leading a post-bop group and a big band, and television and advertising work. He has made 5 albums as a leader, including the big band New Beginning on Discovery and has just recorded an album for the Naxos label with Tim Hagans, Mark Copland, Jay Anderson and Jeff Hirshfield. Nova Trio

Blue Morning (Sam Hokin/Carla Shedivy). The Nova Trio performs around Madison, Wisconsin, but Sam Hokin (the submitter of this track) has relocated to Stockholm, Sweden. Sam returned to jazz in 1992, and has been working mainly in a bossa nova vein, although he also counts Horace Silver and Wes Montgomery among his influences. Terry Bowness Trio

Her Raven Hair (Terry Bowness). A graduate of the University of Missouri-Rolla where he played in the University's jazz band, Terry Bowness (pronounced BO-nus) also hit some jam sessions in Kansas City and Chicago. Beat the Beet

Eva Selina (Hans-Olov Oberg). Beat the Beet was formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1990. The band's repertoire is a blend of mainstream, modal, and "Jazz Messenger" styles of jazz with influences ranging from Johnny Griffin and Dexter Gordon via Coltrane to the Brecker Brothers. Mark Sullivan Trio

The Skronk (Mark Sullivan). A graduate of the University of Michigan, Mark Sullivan performed regularly around Ann Arbor in a number of improvisational settings, until 1986. After relocating to Charlotte, NC at that time, Mark joined an eclectic group called Cornerstone which played everything from country swing to free jazz, and has also regularly performed solo. Brackets (Jeff Beer). The group Brackets performed in the Chicago area from 1990 to 1993, playing originals as well as tunes by Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Steve Lacy and others. Triceratops

Bittersweet (Laura Klein). Triceratops, of course, features a three-horned lineup. Playing all original compositions, Triceratops plays regularly around the SF Bay area, including appearances at the noted jazz clubs Kimball's and Yoshi's and at the Cotati Jazz Festival. Triceratops was one of the first jazz groups to appear on the WWW's famous Internet Underground Music Archives. Hugh Ragin Collective

Pictures (Hugh Ragin). The Hugh Ragin Collective is a loose group of Colorado-based musicians who have played together in various combinations for years. This track is from a recording session paying tribute to Sun Ra, released by Black Saint as Back To Saturn. This group won the 1994 Cognac-Hennessy Best Of Denver Jazz Search. This track was submitted by Marc Sabatella, who plays frequently in Colorado (leading his own groups and as a sideman). Marc played in the Florida State Univeristy Jazz Ensemble I (including performances with Red Rodney and Ira Sullivan) and has been playing professionally for over 10 years. He lists Don Pullen, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner and Hassan Ibn Ali (honest!) among his primary influences.
